WESTT BR Real engine test bench
The WESTT BR bench is a turnkey solution including an instrumented DGEN 380 turbofan and Price Induction’s proprietary engine test platform.
Thanks to the DGEN modern architecture, it is a powerful platform for a wide range of research projects and practical courses, allowing all kinds of experiments on a typical turbofan engine running in a real environment.
Thanks to the DGEN’s small size and consumption, it is the least expensive test bench of an aeronautical turbine, in terms of both acquisition price and operating costs.
Fields of application
The WESTT BR bench is the ultimate experimental platform for engineering programs in gas turbines and propulsion. Possible practical applications include the following:
- Thermodynamics – Experimental computation of the thermodynamics cycle
- Aerodynamics – Analysis of the fan’s downstream flow and correlation with numerical models
- Acoustics & Vibrations – Noise signature analysis and measurement of engine vibration
- Control System – Study of the “all-electric concept”
The WESTT BR is also an advanced testing means for research studies and PhD theses covering innovative turbofan engines. It is particularly cost-efficient since the engine is compact, fuel-efficient and low-maintenance. A running DGEN engine can be used as a research support for many topics including windmilling modeling in aero-engines, air inlet optimization and innovative fan materials.
Price Induction’s engineering team offers dedicated technical consulting services to customize the WESTT BR configuration in order to suit the specific research goals and the existing facilities of its customers.
The WESTT BR bench comes equipped with a fully functional DGEN 380 engine. It is a high by-pass ratio two-spool unmixed flow turbofan with a geared-down fan. It also features an all-electric concept with homebuilt FADEC and electric starter-generator device.
The engine is mounted in the testing room on a support pylon equipped with a thrust probe. The electronic bay contains the engine’s equipment (FADEC and fuel-oil regulation block) and transmits the sensor data to the control room. A detuner guides the cold and hot air flows out of the facility. Finally, motorized video-cameras ensure the room’s safety.
The modern control panel we designed is tailored to fit the specific layout of our customers’ control room. The left panel includes a monitor that displays the FADEC settings interface and enables the configuration of the regulation program. The wider screen above it can be used as a teaching aid in front of larger groups of students. Finally, the center panel allows the control of the engine, the running parameters display, the data recording and video monitoring of the testing room. The engine is fitted with a standard instrumentation plan which can be tweaked in order to accommodate our customers’ requirements.
- Thrust probe integrated in the engine’s support pylon,
- Transducer, pitot tubes and surface pressure probes at all thermodynamic stations
- Fuel & air mass flow measurements
- Accelerometers on all shafts
- Oil and fuel pumps speed measurement
- Valve opening sensors in the Fuel-Oil Regulation Block
DGEN 380 experimental setup
The experimental engine setup is provided to research institutes that have the necessary infrastructure and expertise to install a jet engine within their facility and to interface it with their own systems.
Consting of the DGEN 380 engine and its equipment, a set of basic temperature and pressure probes as well as a scaled-down command interface in a light weight and sturdy case, the setup is sufficient to maintain complete control over the engine whilst collecting all the necessary data to monitor performance levels.
Thanks to the engine’s small size, the WESTT BR testing room only requires 60m² of space and a suitable air inlet to guarantee optimal performances. It should also provide the user with comfortable space for experiments, a workshop area for basic maintenance operations and storages.
The control room features a 3-meter long control panel as well as a study area with a large display screen to accommodate the elarnign needs of large groups of students.
From the very beginning of the customer’s project, Price Induction provides you with general facility recommendations. Whether the customer wishes to retrofit its existing test bench or build a new facility, we offer technical consulting for the planning and on-site support during the facility’s preparation until full completion of the test bench installation.
